Travelling to Chicago?

Here goes my story as first time traveler to US.  My wife, father, sisters came to drop me at the airport as it used to be a practice/tradition (at least for me) that family and loved ones come for a send off.  My flight was scheduled at 3 am on a Sunday morning.  After entering the airport we could see there was some renovation happening at the Chennai airport.  So all the family members were forced to send me off at the entrance of the airport.   I am remembering an issue that happened when I went to London couple of years back.  I was on a business visa to London.  I was about to get the boarding pass.  An airline authority asked for my identity proof of my company.  My bad, I have not taken my identity or my business card.  Fortunately I had my family waiting for me till I clear security checks.  My father drove back home and got me the identity card of my company.

I point I was trying to make here is that remember to take your business cards / identity cards (I would prefer Identity cards) especially when you are on a business trip.  So coming back to my trip to Chicago, I was expecting someone to check my identity card / business card / invite letter.  No one did check the same.  So after all the checks I was waiting for my turn to get into the gate where my flight is docked.  My Flight was Gulf Air and I started my journey to the first stop to Bahrain.

Bahrain airport was good.  But was not that busy at the point of time I went.  I had to wait for couple of hours for the next flight.  One good thing is that one of my colleague was moving to some place at US at the same time.  So I had my breakfast at Bahrain and then continued my journey from Bahrain to London.  Then in London I completed all formalities of baggage and security check and headed to collect my boarding pass. After couple of questions I got a new boarding pass for getting into American Airlines.  And another level of security check before I head to the aircraft, I finally boarded the flight.

Finally after a long journey I reached Chicago O Hare Airport around 7:00 PM.  Fortunately, the weather was good at the time I landed.  After finishing all the security and visa checks I was allowed to step out of the airport.  Moving all my luggages I was looking for a taxi.  I wanted to go to Extended Stay America hotel located at Buffalo Grove.  I got a taxi @ 9:32 PM and hopped into it.  Being the first time I was not aware of any systems around.   I had to pay a higher price for it.  I paid $63 to reach Buffalo Grove.  Later I understood that there are taxi services which takes to the place for half the price.  Based on the recommendation from Extended Stay America hotel, I got used to hire American Call Taxi.

I reached the hotel and payed my initial payment for the stay and additional $5 for one time internet setup.  Here are the checklist of items you would require if you travel to a place like Chicago.

  • Jerkin
  • Thermal wear if you are here in Winter (Lucky me, I did not carry one and the weather is pleasant)
  • International power adapter if you are from other countries.
  • Sweater

The Extended Stay America was Cheap for stay.  However, I had potential problem of travelling to work.  There are no public transport available especially when you are having work outside Chicago downtown.  The place I had to work does not have a public transport and I had to rely heavily on taxi.  Taxi charges heavily and it sucks all your money.  So always try to stay at a place very closer to your work place.  So as I had to travel by taxi, I wanted to move closer to work location.  I got another place which is within 3 miles from my work place.

It was Mariott’s Residence Inn at Deerfield, IL.  The rooms are clean, tidy and comfortable.  The hotel provides a complimentary breakfast, shuttle service, internet service and gym facilities.   So while you travel to Chicago be warned that you will need to stay closer to your work place or choose a hotel which offers free shuttle service for commuting otherwise it would be a hard time and a pain.

So now I am in Deerfield, IL and hope this help at least to an extent.

Trip to Top Slip

Top slip is a tourist spot located near Pollachi.  My wife, I along with Bro. Babu Muthusamy booked a taxi and went to the spot.  The taxi driver was very friendly.   He helped us getting the tickets for camera and entry tickets.  The road which leads to the spot was very bad.

After a journey of 60 minutes we reached a place very near to the spot.  We enjoyed the green pastures and tiny stream flowing across and wanted to take few snaps.  We got down the taxi and to take photos.  A naughty monkey rushed to the taxi and escaped with a parcel.  We were not able to guess what it took.  It opened the parcel to see what was inside.  It was the drivers coat.  It threw it away to a deep pit (I am assuming it was stinking badly).  After this incident, we were getting into the taxi.  The monkey was not allowing the driver to get inside the taxi.  I driver walked away few yards and I drove the taxi for few yards.

The forest was green and natural.  I enjoyed the natural sounds. I wish I had a audio recorder with me so that I record the natural sounds from the forest.  After a long journey we finally reached top slip.  We went there in a odd time that there was nothing there.  But it did not make us lose the spirit we had before.  We shared with 3 families a trip to elephant camp.  One of the family head was speaking to me saying that he was a tour cabs owner and never seen elephants in the forest in 15 years of service.  He said that it was waste of money to go to the elephant camp.  But contrary to his views we were able to see lots of wild elephants in the forest which were descending to drink water from the stream.  We took snaps and I got some footage on my video camera.  It was total fun that we had on the drive to elephant camp.

After coming back from the drive back to top slip, we were hungry and wanted to have some food.  Unfortunately the cook in the hotel did not turn up. As a result, no food was available in top slip.  We just started our taxi and wanted to go till Parambikulam (Kerala) tiger reserve.  As we reached there the security was asking for entry tickets to be purchased.  Our driver told the security that we are going to take food from the canteen inside.  We were allowed to drive inside the Parambikulam tiger reserve till the canteen.  There we saw beautiful peacocks, deers, crocodiles etc.  Parambikulam was more deep inside the forest and was well maintained.  We had good lunch there (Kerala style food) and drove back happily home. While returning we took lots of snaps on the sunset and nature.

A Trip again to Pollachi

To release the stressed out brain, I thought of taking a break.  So I took off couple of weeks from my office and started out to Pollachi.  As it was a long weekend there were no tickets on the bus / train to reach Pollachi.  So I was forced to take a flight to Coimbatore and go for a drive to Pollachi.
We reached Coimbatore after 50 mins journey from Chennai.  The flight was small but good enough for us.  We reached Pollachi around 10 ‘O’ Clock.   I was hungry at the moment and had tasty food from a small hotel out there in Pollachi.  The good was hot and good to taste.
I had a chance to eat Pollachi style veechi paratha which was nothing but stuffed paratha with egg fry.  After eating tummy full we headed out to Aathu Pollachi which is 8 Kilometers away from Pollachi.

Christmas at Pollachi

For some reasons being this my first Christmas after my marriage, I didnt want to spend the joyous moments with my family.  I wanted to go out and spend it somewhere out of my family and relatives.  So I decided to spend my christmas at Pollachi, near Coimbatore.  As it was festive season I wanted to book a ticket to Coimbatore in advance.  Unfortunately, I could not get any seats in the bus / train.  So I had to look at the next chance of taking a flight to Coimbatore.  Although it was quite expensive we were in Coimbatore in just 50 minutes from Chennai.

I have taken few snaps from my mobile on the spectacular scene we saw outside the window.  The clouds were looking awesome.

Exotic Travel

I had a great time with my wife at Pollachi for past 4 days. I had a rapid visit to pollachi and neighboring areas like athu pollachi, aliayar dam, monkey falls, mazhamuzha dam.

The weather was splendid which infact made me feel to stay there itself. Both I and my wife got a nice welcome to pollachi by her hostelmate who took entire responsibility of our stay there. I will have my travelblog updated on the photos and videos.

Yea, its Nandos!

When I was in London, I had a change to get into Nandos (All Chicken Shop). The chicken was so delicious! with the sauce they had served. Enjoyed unlimited Coke. Spicy Chicken.

Picturesque Big Ben!

Here are some awesome pictures of Big Ben. I was spellbound by the marvellous monument which was though through and sculptured. I infact took snaps in lots of angles. Here are few which I liked most. The time I took the photo was the perfect time for taking picture and it was dawn. The time was exactly 7:40 pm. At chennai it promptly gets dark by that time.

At Abu Dhabi Airport

I reached Abudhabi airport for my next connecting flight to London. I had to wait for 3 long hours in the Airport. Fortunately, I met a Chennai Girl who was chatting with me till I boarded the aircraft.
